Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have extremely high tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and toughness, and their addition to carbon fiber composites can significantly improve the mechanical properties of the materials.
Alternatively, they can be used as second-phase reinforcements to increase the tensile strength, flexural strength, shear strength and impact toughness of the composites by dispersing them in the resin matrix or by directly coating them on the surface of carbon fibers. They can provide effective stress transfer and dispersion in localized stress concentration areas, inhibit crack expansion, and thus improve the damage resistance and service life of the overall structure.
